Frequently asked questions
Your app's background recording may be affected by Android's battery optimization features that limit background activities to save power. These features can interfere with consistent GPS tracking.
You might see “Waiting GPS” in the bottom status bar while recording a track. The satellite signal is lost, and this interferes with the recording of the track.
You can automate the recording of your tracks with popular apps like Tasker or MacroDroid. For example, to start or stop tracking when you reach certain location.

Does Geo Tracker record my tracks even when I'm without Internet?
Yes. Geo Tracker only needs a GPS signal to record tracks. If you have a data connection, the first GPS coordinates fix will be significantly faster. However, you need network access to see the map.

Can I see the map without Internet?
Internet access is required at least once before your trip to load the map. Utilizing Mapbox, map data is cached, allowing offline access to previously viewed areas. Google maps deletes cached data quickly.

Does Geo Tracker upload my tracks to any server?
No. Geo Tracker keeps all your tracks locally on your phone.

How to move my recordings in Geo Tracker to the new phone?
To move your tracks from your current phone to a new one, follow these steps:
  1. On your current phone, open Geo Tracker and tap the sync-icon from the bottom of the trip list.
  2. Select any folder on your device where you want to put the exported tracks. Also, you can pick any export format. We suggest KMZ as it's most space-efficient.
  3. Once the synchronization finishes, transfer all the files produced there to the new phone using any convenient method: connect your phone to a computer, send files by email, etc. The most important part here is to put all the files from this folder into some folder on a new phone. Let’s say this folder on the new phone will be “/Documents/MyTracks/”
  4. Open Geo Tracker on the new device and tap the sync-icon from the trip list. Select the folder you created in the previous step and the format you selected in the first step.
You will now see all your tracks on the new device after the import process finishes.

Are there any plans for iPhone/iPad version?
Yes! Right now we're testing a beta version for the iPhone. If you want to try the iOS version first, follow this link.

I want to see my direction always heading up while the map is rotating. Is it possible?
Yes! Just tap the “layers” button on the top panel and switch on the “Navigation mode” toggle.

How can I add markers to an existing saved track?
Select the track and long-press the map where you want to add the marker. You can also drag the pin placed to adjust the marker position.

Why is access to OSM maps a paid feature?
Access to Open Street Maps in Geo Tracker is implemented through Mapbox, a commercial platform responsible for managing map data and images. This service comes with associated costs. Consequently, the choice to utilize OSM/Mapbox is exclusively available to our subscribers who choose a paid subscription.

I want to merge a track or trim part of a track. How do I do this in the application?
The application does not currently have a track editing function, but we plan to develop one. For now, you can edit GPX files using the GPX Studio service.

I lost my phone. Can I find it with Geo Tracker?
Unfortunately, you cannot find your phone with Geo Tracker. Geo Tracker stores your tracks locally and does not save the phone's position to any server.
However, you can try to use Google's Find My Device.

Is it possible to attach photos or videos to markers in Geo Tracker?
Not yet, but this is on our to-do list. Stay tuned!

How can I open a GPX/KML file with Geo Tracker?
Transfer the file to your device any way you like (via email, for example). Open it in that app – a dialog should pop up to select an app to open the file. Select Geo Tracker – and that’s it.

I'm trying to open a GPX/KML file in Geo Tracker, but it gives me an error, or I don't see in it the list. How to fix this?

First of all, please check that you have a valid file. To do this, try to open it with Google Earth or Garmin MapSource. If one of these apps opens and shows the file successfully, but you still can’t open it with Geo Tracker, feel free to email us the problematic file.

Known issue: At the moment, Geo Tracker cannot open GPX files, which contain routes but no tracks (tag <rte> instead of <trk>).

How can I pause or cancel my subscription?
You can cancel your subscription in the Google Play app by following these steps:

1. In the Google Play app, open your profile and select the “Payments and Subscriptions” section,
2. Select “Subscriptions”,
3. Select “Geo Tracker - GPS Tracker” and select “Suspend Payments” or “Cancel Subscription”.

You may continue to use Geo Tracker’s paid features until the end of your billing cycle.

In statistics, what are vertical distance and vertical ascent?
Vertical distance is the total distance you made vertically. Vertical ascent is only the part of it that is made in an upward direction. Here is an illustration.

Let’s consider a track with the following elevation profile: 0, 5, 10, 5.

In this case:
  • the vertical distance is 5 + 5 + 5 = 15
  • the vertical ascent is 5 + 5 + 0 = 10

I want Geo Tracker in my native language. How can I help to make this happen?
If you are interested in translating GeoTracker into your language and are confident that you can translate the entire application, please email us. We will provide you with CSV files containing English texts. After translating them, we will publish the application with the new translations and credit you for them in the "About" section.

Why are Yandex maps no longer available?
Unfortunately, Yandex introduced a new pricing policy that made it impossible for us to continue using them in Geo Tracker. We share your disappointment, but unfortunately, there is nothing we can do except to remove Yandex Maps from Geo Tracker.
